For Girls Who Find The Gym Intimidating

Melbourne Personal Trainer | For Girls Who Find The Gym IntimitatingI’ve spoken to a few girls this week who have said they find going to a gym a bit intimidating. There are often big burly guys in there, making loud noises, and carrying on as if they own the place. This can make some of us quiet girls feel out of place and like we don’t belong. Unfortunately, that means that many girls miss out on lifting weights. This, in turn, means they might miss out on toning up, developing nicely shaped arms and legs, and getting as fit and as healthy as they can.

Now don’t get me wrong, you certainly don’t need the gym. I’m a big advocate of bodyweight exercises and there are an infinite number of things you can do to train at home, so not going to a gym is not an excuse to miss out on exercise! You can also get ridiculously strong with bodyweight exercises alone. But if you want to get even stronger, then you’ll need to pick up a barbell. And unless you have your own at home, that means braving the weights area of the gym.

The best way to go about it, is to simply get in there, act like you own the place and do your training.

Yeah, I know, there are so many thoughts that run through your head…

Fitness Industry Scams: Personal Trainers That Don’t Train Themselves

What is this guy even doing?

Part of my service to you, especially if you don’t train with me, is to help you train better – to get better – to get the results you want. The best way to do that is with a personal trainer. The problem is MOST PERSONAL TRAINERS ARE CRAP.

I don’t like to be negative about anything, as I prefer to present a positive outlook, however it is becoming increasingly apparent to me that most personal trainers in gyms, or who operate on a mobile basis, don’t know their coccyx from their olecranon.

So if you’re looking for a trainer, how can you tell if they know what they’re talking about? How do you know if they know how to train? And how do you know if they’re a SCAM?

Girls, do Guys Scare You Away from the Weights Area?

Girls need to lift weights!I know a lot of girls find it intimidating going to the gym. There are buff guys taking up the whole weights area as if they own the place, so it feels safer to hide on the elliptical or bike. But lifting weights is what boosts your metabolism, builds lean body mass and decreases body fat percentage so the weights area is essential to reaching your goals.

The thing is, most of these guys don’t even know what they’re doing. They’re just full of testosterone and confidence that makes it seem like it’s their area. I’ll give you an example.

Today I had a lot of work to get done and ended up at the gym a bit later than usual. I hate the gym, but I like lifting super heavy weights so at the moment I have to go there. Unfortunately I got there right on Dickhead O’Clock. [Read more...]

What is it with Women and Cardio?

It amazes me how many women would rather do cardio than lift weights. They tell me they just want to burn fat and not build muscle, or they’re scared they’ll bulk up, or they think their thighs will get bigger. All of this stuff is a fallacy!

I am a genetically-ungifted thunder-thigh woman who also fell into the trap of doing cardio instead of lifting weights. I’m still paying for it, but I am on the improve. I love to run ultra marathons and trust me, if I train by running hours and hours every day I end up FATTER! I don’t get lean, I don’t lose weight and I don’t get what I want. [Read more...]

Will lifting weights make my bum look big?

I get a lot of queries from women about lifting heavy weights. They are scared they’ll “bulk up” and look like the incredible hulk. Well you know what? Women just don’t have the capacity for it – we simply don’t have enough testosterone to do this naturally. It doesn’t matter how much you lift, you’re not going to look like a juiced up body builder unless you… you know… juice up yourself with testosterone and steroids. In fact, you’d be doing yourself a disservice if you didn’t lift heavy stuff.

1. Women in particular are susceptible to osteoporosis. That is, degeneration of the bones. Brittle bones may result in fractures and this can be prevented. Ask any medical professional and they will tell you nutrition and weight bearing exercise will increase bone mass. Lifting weights is a necessity!

2. Women do a lot of lifting in real life, so training to be strong will make life much easier. Holding a child on your hips while carrying the groceries is not light work! Of course your husband pitches in but when it comes down to it you are doing a lot too. Imagine what it would be like to easily pick up your child, to put things away easily in the top cupboards, to not strain your back every time you move things around the house. Training to be strong is training to make life easy!

3. Is your goal to “tone up” or to get some “definition”? What do you think those terms mean? They certainly don’t conjure up images of the “skinny fat” look. Toning up and getting definition is a combination of building some muscle, while trimming some fat to get a beautiful body with great shape. This is what we all want!

4. Increasing muscle mass increases your metabolic rate. This is the rate at which you burn calories. When you gain more muscle, your body burns more fat even while you’re sitting on the couch watching TV! This is one of the easiest ways to burn extra calories throughout the day.

5. Want another easy way to burn more calories? Lift weights! During training, you may technically burn less calories lifting weights than going for a run. But running (or any other cardio) isn’t going to give you the “after burn” affect. This “after burn” happens after the metabolic workouts I prescribe and it means that for the next 24-48 hours you will still be burning calories after working out! This is exactly what you want!

6. Do you ever desire to achieve something you never thought possible? Do you want to feel like Superwoman? I tell you there is nothing like lifting heavier than the guys. To dead lift 100kg or squat your own body weight is a great feat of achievement and it really teaches you that nothing is impossible and you can achieve anything you set out to do.

Trust me girls, lifting weights wont make you big and bulky. All it will do is help prevent osteoporosis, burn more fat, make you healthier, fitter and stronger and improve your life. Go for it!
